How to Handle and Tame Your Hamster: A Step-by-Step Guide
Handling your hamster properly is crucial for building trust and keeping both you and your pet safe. Here’s how to do it the right way.
Before You Start
Wait at least 1-2 weeks after bringing your hamster home before attempting to handle it. This gives your hamster time to adjust to its new environment and become accustomed to your presence.
Taming Your Hamster: Week by Week
Week 1-2: Getting Used to Your Presence
Sit near the cage, talk softly to your hamster, and let it get used to your voice and smell. Offer treats through the bars but don’t attempt to pick it up yet.
Week 3-4: Hand Training
Place your hand inside the cage with an open palm. Let your hamster come to you and investigate. Reward it with treats. Never grab or chase your hamster.
Week 5+: Gentle Handling
Once your hamster is comfortable crawling into your hand, you can gently lift it. Always support its body and keep sessions short (5-10 minutes).
Safe Handling Techniques
Never: Grab your hamster quickly, squeeze it, or hold it too high above the ground. Always use both hands and keep it close to your body.
Always wash your hands before and after handling to prevent the spread of germs.
Signs Your Hamster is Stressed
- Excessive squeaking or chattering teeth
- Puffing up its cheeks (defensive behavior)
- Biting or attempting to bite
- Rapid, panicked movements
If you notice these signs, return your hamster to its cage immediately and try again another time.
