Experiences vary from bag to bag. Many buyers describe Clean & Cozy as soft and low in dust. Others report bags that release a visible cloud when poured or contain harder paper, colored fragments, fibers or plastic-like pieces.
There is no reliable failure rate, so these reports do not prove the whole product line is bad. They do make a quick check worthwhile.
When opening a new bag, fluff a small amount over a clear surface and check for:
- a heavy or persistent dust cloud
- damp or moldy bedding
- a strong chemical or musty smell

In practice, absorbency helps keep small wet areas easier to spot-clean. It does not replace cleaning. Remove damp bedding when you find it and refill only that area.

How deep should Kaytee Clean & Cozy be?
Blue Cross recommends at least 20 cm of suitable digging bedding so a hamster can create tunnels and nests. That is much deeper than the one to three inches sometimes shown in general small-animal instructions.

The amount required can surprise new owners. A completely empty 100 cm by 50 cm floor filled evenly to a depth of 20 cm represents 100 liters of space:

How to set it up for better burrows
- Open a small section of the bag and inspect it before filling the enclosure.
- Pull apart compressed clumps with clean, dry hands.
- Add bedding in layers and press each layer lightly so it is not extremely loose.
- Provide at least 20 cm where the hamster will dig, with a deeper area if the enclosure allows it.
- Put heavy hides, wheels and sand baths on stable platforms or supports so tunneling cannot make them sink or fall.
- Keep the substrate dry. Do not mist paper bedding to make tunnels hold.

What if my hamster starts sneezing?
