Commercial barred hamster cages typically have shallow bases that cannot hold more than 2 to 3 inches of bedding, and their floor footprints are usually well under the recommended 40 by 20 inches (100 by 50 cm) minimum. A 105-liter storage bin, by contrast, typically measures around 40 by 19 inches at the base and has sides tall enough to hold 10 to 12 inches of bedding comfortably. What you need

  • A large plastic storage bin: At least 105 liters. The Sterilite 105-Qt and IRIS USA 136-Qt are popular choices. Measure the base before buying: aim for at least 40 by 18 inches of floor space. Bigger is always better.
  • Wire mesh / hardware cloth: Half-inch or quarter-inch galvanized steel hardware cloth (sold in hardware stores). You need a piece large enough to cover a cut-out in the lid. Avoid chicken wire, which has gaps too large for hamsters to be safe around.
  • Cutting tool: A box cutter or jigsaw for the plastic lid, and wire cutters or tin snips for the mesh.
  • Fasteners: Zip ties, metal binder clips, or a hot glue gun. Zip ties are the most reliable.
  • Sandpaper or a lighter: To smooth or melt any sharp cut plastic edges.

Step 1: Choose and check your bin

Measure the interior floor of the bin, not the exterior footprint. Many bins taper slightly, so the base is smaller than the top. Confirm the base gives you at least 40 by 18 inches of flat floor space. Check that the lid fits securely: hamsters are surprisingly strong and will push against a poorly fitting lid. The bin should be opaque or semi-transparent: fully transparent bins let in too much light and make hamsters feel exposed, which increases stress.

Step 2: Mark and cut the ventilation panel

Draw a rectangle on the lid leaving at least 1.5 to 2 inches of plastic border on all sides: you need that frame to remain sturdy and hold the mesh. Cut carefully along your line with a box cutter or jigsaw. Remove the plastic cutout. Smooth all cut edges with sandpaper or carefully run a lighter flame along the edge to melt any sharp points. Cut your hardware cloth to a size slightly larger than the hole you cut, so it overlaps the plastic frame on all sides. Lay it over the opening from inside or outside the lid, aligning it evenly. Secure it to the plastic frame with zip ties spaced every 2 to 3 inches around the perimeter. Pull each zip tie tight and trim the tail end. Clip or bend any exposed wire ends on the mesh inward so they do not snag anything. Test the lid by pressing firmly: the mesh should not flex or shift, and the lid should still click or lock onto the bin securely.

Optional upgrade: Cut a ventilation panel in one long side of the bin as well, about halfway up. This improves airflow significantly, especially in humid climates. Use the same mesh-and-zip-tie method. Make sure the panel is high enough that bedding does not pour out through it.

Step 4: Set up the inside

Add at least 8 to 10 inches (20 to 25 cm) of safe bedding, such as unscented paper-based bedding, kiln-dried aspen, or a coco coir and paper mix. Place the wheel on a flat tile or cork mat so it sits stably in the bedding. Add at least one hide, a shallow sand bath dish, a water bottle mounted through a small hole in the side or hung on the rim, a food bowl or scatter-fed food, and some chews.
